
This summer has asked a lot of Britain’s land and its water. Weeks of heat and dry weather have pushed the country into a familiar but worsening pattern, and this year it is showing up in two places at once.
The first is fire. Fire and rescue services across England and Wales have already responded to well over 700 wildfires so far in 2026, with a sharp spike in the back half of July alone. Scotland has had its own serious incident too, with crews tackling a major wildfire in the Cairngorms. Fire chiefs have been clear that the risk remains high across the country, not just in the usual hotspots.
The second is water. Eight water companies across the UK now have hosepipe restrictions in place, from the south east to the west of Wales. What is worth noting, and easy to miss in the headlines, is that most of these companies are not saying their reservoirs are running dry. Welsh Water has been explicit about this in west Wales. The reservoirs are holding up. The problem is the sheer pace of demand during the hot spell, more people watering gardens, filling paddling pools, washing cars, all at once, faster than treatment works can keep up.
Two different problems, then, but the same root cause. A long stretch of hot, dry weather is putting pressure on the country from both ends. Land that dries out becomes fuel. Systems built for average demand strain under a summer that is anything but average.
None of this is really new. Britain has had hot, dry summers before, and will again. What is more interesting is what has changed in how the country responds to them.
Fire services have spent the years since 2022 building specific wildfire capability, better equipment, better training, better coordination between brigades, rather than treating it as a once in a generation freak event. Water companies have been doing the same on the supply side, some publishing weekly reservoir data openly, others investing in new storage and cutting leakage significantly over the past decade. Welsh Water alone has cut network losses by half in the last ten years, which matters when demand jumps this hard this fast.
That is the part worth holding onto. Extreme weather years used to catch the country flat-footed. This time, the language coming from fire services and water companies alike is different, less panic, more management. Companies naming demand-led restrictions honestly rather than reaching for the word drought when it does not apply. Fire services publishing real numbers rather than vague warnings. It suggests infrastructure and institutions that are learning, even if slowly, to plan for a version of British summer that is hotter and drier more often.
For anyone running a small, sustainable business, there is a useful lesson buried in here too. It is rarely one dramatic event that tests a system. It is ordinary demand, repeated and sustained, that finds the weak points. The response that works is not heroics in the moment but the quieter work done in the years before, fixing leaks, training crews, building resilience into ordinary operations so the extraordinary does not become a crisis.
Britain will get through this summer, as it has got through every hot, dry one before it. The more useful question is whether the country keeps building the kind of quiet resilience this summer is testing, or waits for the next one to relearn the same lesson.
