Cotton supports the livelihoods of an estimated 250 million people worldwide and makes up roughly a quarter of all the textile fibre used on the planet. For a plant that ends up as something as ordinary as a t-shirt, that is an enormous amount resting on how well the soil it grows in is actually looked after.

For a long time, that soil was not looked after well at all. A quiet but genuinely significant shift is underway to change that.

What Regenerative Actually Means

It is worth being precise about the term, because it gets used loosely. Organic cotton farming is primarily about what growers leave out, avoiding synthetic pesticides and fertilisers. Regenerative agriculture asks a different question. Rather than simply minimising harm, it asks how farming can actively rebuild the health of the land it depends on, improving soil structure, boosting biodiversity, storing more carbon and using water more efficiently, all while keeping the farm commercially viable for the people running it.

Field to Market, an alliance working across sustainable agriculture, defines it as farming that sequesters carbon in the soil while intentionally improving soil health, biodiversity, water quality and air quality, without undermining the farm’s ability to keep producing. That last part matters. Regenerative agriculture has to work economically for the farmer growing the cotton, or it does not spread beyond a handful of committed early adopters.

Why Healthy Soil Changes Everything Downstream

Soil health sits underneath nearly every other outcome in this picture. Practices like cover cropping, planting something in the ground between cotton harvests rather than leaving fields bare, and reduced tillage, disturbing the soil less between plantings, work together to build up organic matter, slow water runoff and let soil absorb and hold rainfall far more effectively than degraded, compacted ground can manage.

That has practical knock on effects well beyond the environmental case. Better water retention means cotton crops cope better with drought. Healthier soil structure reduces erosion, protecting the long term productivity of the land itself. None of this is abstract sustainability language disconnected from a farmer’s actual bottom line. It is soil that keeps producing a viable crop for longer, under increasingly unpredictable weather.

The Scale This Has Reached

What is genuinely encouraging is how far this has moved beyond a handful of pilot farms. In the United States, more than sixty per cent of cotton farmers surveyed reported using both cover crops and reduced or no till methods to cut erosion, and separate reporting from the US Cotton Trust Protocol found that seventy eight per cent of its growers are actively adopting practices that improve soil health and biodiversity. That is not a fringe movement anymore. It is closer to a majority practice among growers who were surveying it.

The US Regenerative Cotton Fund, an initiative of the Soil Health Institute launched with founding support from the Ralph Lauren Corporate Foundation, has run more than twenty five field demonstrations and workshops, reaching over 1,300 farmers and advisors across seven states. It has established soil health benchmarks across more than two million acres in Texas and Arkansas alone, giving individual farmers personalised reports on their own land’s soil condition and a science based basis for setting improvement goals rather than guessing. The fund’s stated target, drawing down a million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent through regenerative soil health practices, is an ambitious number for an industry that has historically had a difficult relationship with its own environmental footprint.

Reaching Smaller Farmers Too

Scale in the US cotton belt is one part of the picture. A separate initiative, the Regenerative Cotton Standard from the Aid by Trade Foundation, is aimed specifically at smallholder farmers, a group that makes up a substantial share of global cotton production but has historically had far less access to the training, data and support that larger operations can draw on. The standard focuses on the same core outcomes, soil health, biodiversity, farmer livelihoods and climate resilience, but built around the realities of small scale farming rather than assuming the infrastructure of a large commercial operation.

That distinction matters. A large share of the world’s cotton is grown by smallholders, often in regions where climate volatility is already a daily reality rather than a future risk. Regenerative practices that genuinely work at that scale, rather than only in well resourced commercial operations, are what determines whether this shift becomes a genuinely global one or stays concentrated among the growers who already had the most resources to begin with.

The Part Still Being Worked Out

None of this is finished, and the people running these programmes would be the first to say so. Regenerative agriculture is inherently adaptive, shaped by local soil, climate and farming conditions rather than a single fixed checklist that applies everywhere equally, which makes it harder to measure and certify consistently than a more rigid standard would be. Verifying genuine soil health improvement and carbon sequestration at scale, across millions of acres and thousands of individual farms, is a real measurement challenge that the sector is still building better tools to solve.

There is also the honest question of how quickly practices genuinely spread once the initial funding and workshops move on. Farmer education programmes can shift practice, but sustaining it depends on the economics continuing to make sense for the grower long after any pilot funding has ended.

Why It’s Worth Following

What makes this shift worth paying attention to is the direction rather than any single number. A crop grown on this scale, underpinning the livelihoods of a quarter of a billion people and supplying a quarter of the world’s textile fibre, was, for a long time, farmed with very little attention paid to the long term health of the land producing it. That is changing, measurably, on millions of acres, through farmer led programmes that are treating soil not as a resource to extract from but as the actual foundation the whole industry depends on.

It is a slow, unglamorous kind of progress, measured in soil organic matter and cover crop acreage rather than anything a t-shirt label could easily communicate. But it is happening underneath a genuinely enormous share of the clothing the world wears, and that is worth knowing about even if you will never see it on a swing tag.
