
In June this year, three osprey chicks hatched at RSPB Campfield Marsh in Cumbria. That sentence sounds unremarkable until you learn the detail sitting underneath it: as far as anyone can establish, ospreys had not successfully bred on an RSPB reserve in England since the Victorian era.
Not since before living memory. Not since before most of the conservation movement that now protects them existed at all.
How Complete the Loss Actually Was
Ospreys once bred across much of Britain. Like several other birds of prey, they were persecuted heavily through the nineteenth century, targeted to protect livestock and increasingly sought after by egg and specimen collectors as the birds themselves grew rarer, a grim feedback loop in which scarcity itself became part of what made a nest worth robbing. By 1847 they had disappeared as a breeding bird in England entirely. Scotland held on a little longer, but by 1916 the last known breeding pair, at Loch Loyne, had gone too. For several decades, Britain had no breeding ospreys at all.
The species found its own way back into Scotland first, without much human help. A pair settled at Loch Garten, near Inverness, in 1954, and slowly, aided by nest protection efforts and a public engagement campaign with the rather charming name Operation Osprey, the Scottish population began to rebuild. What did not happen, for a long stretch afterward, was any equivalent recovery in England. Ospreys have an unusually strong tendency to return to nest close to where they themselves fledged, which meant that even forty years after Loch Garten, there were still no osprey nests anywhere in England. The birds were, in a sense, geographically stuck, rebuilding steadily in one country while remaining entirely absent from its southern neighbour.
Giving the Recovery a Push
That is what led, in 1996, to a deliberate translocation project at Rutland Water in the East Midlands, working with the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust and Anglian Water, and drawing on the expertise of Roy Dennis, one of the people most closely associated with the Scottish recovery from the start. Young ospreys were brought south and released, effectively giving the species the geographical nudge its own natural dispersal habits were unlikely to provide on their own within any useful timeframe.
The same approach was later used at Poole Harbour in Dorset, where chicks were introduced from 2017 onward. In 2022 a pair known as osprey 022 and CJ7 became the first ospreys to breed successfully anywhere on England’s south coast in around 180 years. They have returned to the same nest at Careys Secret Garden near Wareham every year since, and in both 2024 and 2025 produced four chicks in a single season, an unusually large brood that local conservationists have described as remarkable even by the standards of a species already exceeding expectations.
Why This Year’s Cumbria Hatching Matters Differently
The Campfield Marsh chicks this June represent something slightly different from the Rutland and Poole stories, because Campfield Marsh was not the site of a deliberate reintroduction. The reserve simply put up a nesting platform, in the hope that ospreys already recovering elsewhere might eventually find their way to it naturally, the same slow dispersal that had left England without breeding ospreys for so long, now working quietly in the other direction. This year, for the first time since Victorian records end, it did.
The parents are believed to be first time breeders. The male, ringed near Dumfries in 2021, paired with an unringed female of unknown age and origin after both arrived at the reserve this spring. Three chicks hatched between the 7th and 14th of June, were fitted with identifying leg rings in July, and are expected to fledge and begin the long migration to Africa from September. There is a particular kind of quiet satisfaction in a bird choosing a platform built specifically to invite it, arriving of its own accord, and simply getting on with the job asked of it.
What the Wider Pattern Suggests
Research from the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation looking at how ospreys have spread since these various reintroductions began has found that the recovery leans heavily on a small number of unusually adventurous individuals willing to settle somewhere well outside where the bulk of the population already breeds. Left entirely alone, that kind of long distance pioneering happens, but rarely and unpredictably. The researchers involved suggest that deliberately encouraging or replicating those pioneering movements, through artificial nest platforms in promising new areas or through direct translocation where needed, is genuinely the fastest way to accelerate a recovery that would otherwise be at the mercy of a small number of birds choosing, by chance, to go somewhere nobody else has gone yet.
That is a slightly humbling way to think about conservation success. It is not simply a matter of protecting a species and waiting. It is closer to identifying exactly where the natural process is likely to get stuck, and finding a careful, limited way to help it over that particular hurdle, then stepping back and letting the birds do the rest.
A Long Way Back, Taken Slowly
Return rates for young ospreys making the round trip to and from Africa each year sit at around thirty per cent, and nobody watching a nest can be entirely sure what happens to the birds that do not come back. Some are lost to predators along the way. Some are simply blown off course over open ocean. Poole Harbour’s conservationists have watched this uncertainty play out season after season, celebrating each returning bird while quietly aware that plenty of others, ringed the same year, will not be coming back at all.
Against that backdrop, three chicks hatching on a platform in Cumbria, on a reserve that had never previously seen a nest at all, feels like exactly the kind of small, hard won progress this recovery has always been built from. Not a single dramatic turning point, but one more nest, one more pair, one more platform that worked. Ospreys have been rebuilding their presence in England this way for nearly thirty years now, one pioneering pair at a time. Whatever happens to this particular Cumbrian brood on their first journey south, the platform they hatched on will very likely be waiting for whoever comes back to use it next.
